Telegram glossary
40 short definitions of the Telegram and creator-economy words you meet when following creators on Telegram. Neutral, plain English, no jargon left unexplained.
Telegram basics
- Personal account
- A regular Telegram user profile, the one you sign up with using a phone number. You chat with it one to one. TeleSearch lists personal accounts only, never channels, groups or bots. How we check accounts
- Channel
- A one-to-many broadcast feed. Only admins post, subscribers read, and the subscriber list is hidden from other subscribers. Channels can be public (with a username) or private (join by invite link).
- Group
- A shared chat where every member can post, unless admins restrict it. Good for communities that talk to each other, unlike a channel where only admins speak.
- Supergroup
- A large group with extra admin tools such as slow mode, topics and detailed permissions. Telegram converts busy groups into supergroups automatically; they can hold up to 200,000 members.
- Channel vs group vs personal account
- A channel broadcasts to many people, a group lets many people talk together, and a personal account is one person you message directly. Creators often run a channel for updates and a personal account for private conversations.
- Username
- The public @handle of an account, channel, group or bot. It is 5 to 32 characters long, uses letters, digits and underscores, starts with a letter, cannot end with an underscore or contain two in a row, and is not case sensitive. Anyone can find you by it without seeing your phone number.Telegram username checker
- t.me link
- Telegram's official short link, in the form t.me/username. It opens the account, channel, group or bot in the app, or a preview page in the browser.Telegram link generatorTelegram link checker
- Invite link
- A link that lets people join a private channel or group, usually in the form t.me/+code. Admins can limit how many people use it, set an expiry date or require approval before joining.
- Bot
- An automated Telegram account run by software. Bot usernames end in "bot". Bots answer commands, sell digital goods, manage groups or open mini apps.
- Mini app
- A web app that opens inside Telegram, launched from a bot or a link. Shops, games and booking tools often run as mini apps.
- Bio
- The short text on a Telegram profile, under the name. Creators use it to say who they are and to point to their other links.Telegram bio generator
- Pinned message
- A message fixed at the top of a chat, channel or group so it stays visible. Creators often pin their rules, prices or links.
- Boost
- Premium users can boost a channel or group. Enough boosts unlock extra features for it, such as posting stories or custom colours.
- Secret chat
- A one-to-one chat with end-to-end encryption, tied to the device it was started on. Messages can self-destruct on a timer. Regular chats are cloud chats synced across devices.
- Protected content
- A setting that stops members of a channel or group from forwarding, saving or copying its messages. Screenshots can still be possible on some devices.
Money on Telegram
- Telegram Stars
- Telegram's in-app currency for digital goods and services. Users buy Stars in the app, then spend them on paid media, channel subscriptions, reactions or items sold by bots. Creators can withdraw what they earn under Telegram's rules.Telegram Stars calculator
- Paid media
- Photos or videos posted with a price in Stars. Viewers see a blurred preview and unlock the full file after paying. It is Telegram's built-in version of pay-per-view.
- Paid channel subscription
- A monthly fee in Stars to join a channel through a special invite link. Access ends when the subscriber stops paying.
- Paid reaction
- A reaction that costs Stars, sent on a channel post to support its author. It works like a small tip shown publicly on the post.
- PPV (pay-per-view)
- A single piece of locked content sold for a one-time price, common on creator platforms. On Telegram, paid media plays this role.
- Tip
- A voluntary payment to a creator, outside any subscription. On Telegram it can be paid reactions, Stars gifts or a payment through a bot.
Safety and trust
- Verified (Telegram)
- The checkmark Telegram shows next to notable accounts, channels and bots it has confirmed as official. Most creators do not have it, so its absence does not mean an account is fake. Telegram also shows checks from approved third-party verifiers.
- SCAM and FAKE labels
- Warnings Telegram adds next to the name of accounts, channels or bots reported for fraud (SCAM) or for pretending to be someone else (FAKE). Do not send money to a labelled account.
- Impersonation
- An account that copies a real person's name and photos to collect payments or personal data. Typical signs: a username with extra letters or digits, a brand new account, and pressure to pay first.Safety tipsReport a listing
- Phishing
- A message or link built to steal your login code or password, often a fake Telegram login page or a request to share the code Telegram sends you. Telegram staff never ask for that code.
- Two-step verification
- An extra password Telegram asks for when you log in on a new device, on top of the SMS or app code. It protects your account if someone gets your code.
- Collectible username
- A username sold at auction on Fragment, a platform linked to Telegram, and owned as a token on the TON blockchain. Some are shorter than 5 characters. A rare username says nothing about who runs the account.
Creator economy
- Creator
- A person who publishes content for an audience and earns from it, through subscriptions, single sales, tips or brand deals.
- Link in bio
- The link a creator puts in a social profile, often a page that lists all their other accounts. It is the safest place to find a creator's real Telegram, because the creator controls it.
- DM (direct message)
- A private one-to-one conversation. On Telegram, a DM goes to a personal account, which is why fans look for a creator's personal username rather than a channel.
- Subscription platform
- A site where fans pay a monthly fee for a creator's content, with the platform taking a share of revenue. Telegram can complement it for chat and updates.Telegram vs OnlyFansTelegram vs Fansly
- Agency
- A company that manages one or more creators: marketing, scheduling, and often running their chats. Agencies can manage several listings from one TeleSearch account. For agencies
- Chatter
- A person hired by a creator or agency to answer fan messages on the creator's behalf.
On TeleSearch
- Listing
- A creator profile on TeleSearch that links to one or more personal Telegram accounts. Every link is checked against t.me before it goes live and re-checked on a schedule. How we verify
- Verified (TeleSearch)
- A listing whose owner proved control of the Telegram account by placing a one-time code in its bio. It is separate from Telegram's own checkmark.
