Find someone on Telegram: search by username
Telegram finds people by their public username, not by their name. Type the exact @username in the search bar or open t.me/username, and the account appears if that username exists. There is no member directory and no search by real name, and phone numbers are protected by each person's privacy settings. If you only have a name, look for the username on the person's own public profiles; for creators who want to be found, a directory such as TeleSearch lists it for you.

What Telegram search really does
Telegram is a messenger built around privacy, not a social network. The search bar at the top of your chat list looks through your own chats and contacts first, then shows global results: public accounts, channels, groups and bots whose username matches what you typed. A personal account shows up there only if its owner has set a username, and you need that username, not the display name.
What it does not do matters just as much. You cannot search strangers by real name, city or interest, and there is no member list to browse. Typing a first name may surface public channels or accounts whose username happens to contain it, which is rarely the person you mean. Phone numbers are protected by each person's privacy settings. That is a design choice, and this guide does not try to get around it.
Start from what you have
Three situations cover almost every search. Find yours:
- You have a username. Type it in Telegram's search bar, with or without the @, or open t.me/username. Nothing comes up? Check the format with our Telegram username checker.
- You have a link. Open it. A t.me link goes straight to the account, and a link-in-bio page usually lists the Telegram link with the others. The username is the part after t.me/.
- You only have a name. Telegram cannot search it. Look for the username on the person's public profiles or, for a creator, search the name on TeleSearch.
Searching by @username or t.me link
If you know the username, you have everything you need. Open Telegram, tap the search bar and type it. You can also open t.me/username in any browser or tap it in another app: Telegram opens the profile, or shows its web preview when the app is not installed.
Usernames are not case-sensitive, so @Example_Name and @example_name are the same account. Display names work differently: anyone can use the same name and the same photo, and only the username is unique.
Telegram username format rules
A Telegram username has 5 to 32 characters, uses only letters a-z, digits 0-9 and underscores, starts with a letter, does not end with an underscore and never has two underscores in a row. If what you were given breaks one of these rules, it was mistyped or it is not a username (a few short collectible usernames follow separate rules). Paste it into our Telegram username checker to see which rule fails, get its t.me link and see whether it is listed on TeleSearch.
When you only have a name
Start where the person already publishes things. Creators usually put their Telegram link in an Instagram, X or TikTok bio, or on a link-in-bio page, and the part after t.me/ is the username. Copy it instead of retyping it: one wrong character leads to a different account.
For creators who want to be found, a directory does the work. TeleSearch lists creators (18+) on their personal Telegram accounts, with the username they publish, and you can search it by name, by @username or by describing who you are looking for. It is free, and you can browse Telegram creators without an account. If someone has never made a username public, there is no honest way to find them on Telegram, and that is what privacy settings are for.
Real account or copycat?
Finding a username is half the job; the other half is making sure it belongs to the person you mean. Copycats reuse a creator's name and photos on a lookalike username: an l swapped for an i, a 0 for an o, an extra underscore. Compare the username letter by letter with the one on the creator's own profiles, and check that it is a personal account with a Send Message button, not a channel or a bot. Our guide on how to tell if a Telegram creator is real goes through every check.
Usernames can also change hands. When someone drops a username, another account can take it later, so an old link proves nothing on its own. Every TeleSearch listing shows since when it has been listed, and its link was checked against t.me when it was submitted.
A short safety note
Searching for a username does not notify anyone, but messaging does: the person sees your name, your username if you have one, and whatever your privacy settings allow, so check Privacy and Security before you write. Never pay an account you have not confirmed, never share the login code Telegram sends you, and report impersonators in Telegram. If a copy is listed on TeleSearch, tell us on the Report page.

Questions
Can I search Telegram by someone's name?
No. Global search matches public usernames, channels and groups, and a person's name is only matched among your own chats and contacts. There is no member directory, and phone numbers are protected by each person's privacy settings.
Will someone know if I search for them on Telegram?
No. Telegram does not tell anyone that you searched their username or opened their profile. They only see you when you send them a message.
Why can't I find a username I was given?
Check it letter by letter and against the format rules, then open t.me/username in a browser. If no account shows up, the owner may have changed or removed the username, which breaks every old link.
Can TeleSearch find any Telegram user?
No. TeleSearch is not a people search. It lists creators (18+) on personal Telegram accounts whose usernames are already public, and anyone can ask for a listing to be removed.
